Champagne is the only alcoholic drink which is acceptable to be drunk for breakfast, lunch, dinner and beyond. Beer at breakfast would be obscure. Champagne however turns it into an occasion. Champagne turns anything into an occasion in fact, and the sound of a cork popping brings both joy and a warm feeling of celebration to anyone who hears it.
As event managers, our job is to ensure our client’s guests have a night to remember and champagne always adds that special touch to events. And for us, what better way to celebrate finishing a project than cheersing with a glass in the bar afterwards? Even the weariness of a 15 hour day on your feet is combatted with champagne as it gives you that certain sparkle back: “Champagne is the one thing that gives me zest when I’m tired” said Brigitte Bardot, and she wasn’t wrong. Maybe it’s the bubbles, maybe it’s the sense of celebration, or maybe it’s that glorious feeling of relief you get when the cork pops and you know that something great has been achieved. That is why at the end of every grand prix a magnum is shaken and opened, and the winners douse each other and the captivated onlookers. It really is the ultimate display of victory and power.
It isn’t only associated with winning however, and as Sir Winston Churchill famously said – “In victory, deserve it. In defeat, need it!” Churchill famously adored champagne, and Pol Roger was his favourite. After Churchill’s death in 1965, Pol Roger placed a black border around the labels of Brut NV that was to be shipped to the UK as a symbol of respect for their biggest fan. In 1984 they even named their Pinot Noir-dominant Cuvée after him.
At the end of a bad day, sometimes the only thing that helps is a stiff drink. And there is no reason why this shouldn’t be the fizzy stuff. It really can lighten the mood, and make you feel great despite the feeling of a bad day wearing you down: “There comes a time in every woman’s life when the only thing that helps is a glass of champagne.” – Bette Davis in ‘Old Aquaintance’
Now is the season when corks are popping more frequently than usual, and so the best news you may hear all day is that according to studies up to three glasses could help improve your memory. Not one, not two, but three glasses of that liquid gold. Now that deserves a drink to celebrate!
Loved by politicians, actors, and us event profs alike, champagne is the drink that brings us all together. That champagne feeling is universal – A glittery sensation that fills us with a sparkly shine. The way we drink it varies. Some like to drink it as a cocktail, such as the classic champagne cocktail which has been a favourite for many years. A dash of Angostura bitters is dropped onto a sugar cube in a champagne flute followed by Cognac and then topped up with chilled champagne. The glass is then garnished with an orange slice and maraschino cherry.
Served Just How You Like It
If you have spent your summer in Ibiza or Mallorca you will have probably had it over ice with fruit and mint a la Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial. If you love it over ice, you can do as Bill Murray does and simply drink it by the pint! ‘I fill it with ice and I pour the champagne in it, because champagne can never be too cold’ says Murray. This is a great method to avoid the champagne hangover, which we champagne lovers all know too well: ‘The problem people have with champagne is they drink it and they crash with it, because the sugar content is so high and you get really dehydrated. But if you can get the ice in it, you can drink it supremely cold and at the same time you’re getting the melting ice, so it’s like a hydration level, and you can stay at this great level for a whole weekend. You don’t want to crash. You want to keep that buzz, that bling, that smile.’ Problem solved then, thanks Bill.
Champagne till the end
And when we finally come to the end of the event, the celebration, or even the end of our lives, what better way to go than this: “I would prefer to live forever in perfect health, but if I must at some time leave this life, I would like to do so ensconced on a chaise longue, perfumed, wearing a velvet robe and pearl earrings, with a flute of champagne beside me and having just discovered the answer to the last problem in a British cryptic crossword.” – Olivia de Haviland
The ultimate luxury, the taste of celebration, and the sound of success – everything about champagne is positive. It will be there with you in the good times, and hold your hand through the bad. Forget diamonds – champagne truly is a girl’s best friend.
