It’s the 2nd of January and we are back to work with a bump, no more stuffing yourself with Turkey, Ham and gallons of fizz. Instead we have a new focus…. new year’s resolutions.
Did you know there is actually a history to the new year resolution beyond ‘not smoking’, ‘not drinking’ or in our Becky’s case ‘not eating cheese’.
According to the publication the Latin Times, the new years resolution started in the times of the Babylonians who made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. This would be done on ‘New Years Day’ originally created in 46 BC when Julius Caesar created the calendar. The Romans dedicated the day to Janus, the God of new beginnings.
Enough of the history lesson, now in the modern day we seem to focus so much on what we will not do rather than what we WILL do. So here are our team’s resolutions for 2014, in 363 days we will let you know how we got on!
Gareth – he’s off to Belfast
Confessing to never visiting Ireland, he wants to go to Belfast. Lonely Planet recommends this Jewel off a hotel which actually sits in the cathedral and even has a rooftop hot tub, get saving Gareth! http://www.lonelyplanet.com/united-kingdom/northern-ireland/county-down/belfast-to-bangor/hotels/the-merchant-hotel-4-178147
Becky – fancies a pop up or two
London is bursting with pop ups, we will be hosting our own ‘Pop up Restaurant’ February in partnership with Rhubarb Food. Watch this space Becky!
Sam – she’s off to the theatre once a month for 2014
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is first on the list, rumour has it there is even a real chocolate waterfall! http://www.getyourguide.com/london-l57/charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-london-t34427/
Emma – will film a second of life everyday
With the ‘1 second everyday app’ which lets you film only 1 second and will create a video montage after 365 days. Can’t wait to watch it at the end! http://1secondeveryday.com/
Francesca – fancies herself as a bit of a craft whiz
Francesca wants to learn some sewing or knitting skills. This ‘make me a domestic sewing goddess’ course at the Papered Parlour in Clapham looks fab.
What’s your new years resolution?
